Commercial License
For client work and products sold in ordinary quantities
Last updated: October 15, 2026Contents
What This Licence Is For
The Commercial Licence covers professional work: client projects, your own business, marketing, and products you sell in ordinary quantities. It is the licence most people need.
The two numbers that matter
Up to 5,000 units of any end product that contains the file, sold or distributed. Up to 500,000 lifetime viewers for content that is watched rather than sold. Past either, you need the Extended Commercial Licence.
This licence is granted to one individual or one company, is non-exclusive and cannot be transferred. It begins when you download the file and continues indefinitely for the uses set out below, unless it is ended for a breach of these terms.
The Limits, Precisely
Three numbers decide whether this licence is enough. They are counted per end product, not per file and not per client.
Digital advertising impressions are not capped. Run the ads as hard as you like.
What You May and May Not Do
You may
- Use the file in unlimited client projects: freelance, agency or in-house
- Use it for your own business: marketing, presentations, proposals, brand material
- Make physical products for sale that contain it, up to 5,000 units each: packaging, labels, merchandise, print
- Make digital products for sale that contain it, up to 5,000 sales each: e-books, publications, downloadable graphics
- Use it in product packaging and branding across any number of separate products, each counted to its own 5,000
- Run paid digital advertising with unlimited impressions
- Use it in local printed advertising: signage, billboards and collateral within roughly a 200-mile radius
- Use it in articles, websites and video up to 500,000 lifetime viewers
- Use it on one business social media account you own and run
- Use a 3D model in client rendering work, and to make printed objects for sale up to 5,000 units
- Modify it freely for any of the above
- Show the finished work in your portfolio and in pitches
You may not
- Exceed 5,000 units of any single end product
- Exceed 500,000 lifetime viewers on a single piece of content
- Sell the file itself, or anything from which it can be extracted: templates, mockup PSDs with separable layers, UI kits, asset bundles
- Use it in print-on-demand, made-to-order or download-on-demand products where the buyer customises it
- Use it in national or global printed advertising campaigns
- Use it in software: a website application, a mobile app, a desktop program or a game
- Use it in a SaaS product or a design system distributed to others
- Use it on more than one business account
- Redistribute or sublicense it, including inside a theme, plugin or page builder
- Send the source file to a client, a colleague or a collaborator: each person who works on the file needs a licence
- Put it in shared cloud storage that unlicensed people can reach
- Use it in a trademark or logo
- Use it to train a machine learning model, or include it in a training dataset
- Mint it as an NFT or put it on a blockchain
- Claim authorship of the file, including in a version you modified
Delivering to a client: the line to watch
You may deliver the finished work to a client: the printed box, the flattened artwork, the rendered image. You may not hand over the source file or a layered document from which the original asset can be pulled out. If your client needs the working file, they need their own licence, which is usually cheaper than the argument.
Who Is Covered
One licence covers one person working on the file. If two designers in your studio both open it, that is two licences. The licence follows the person doing the work, not the project and not the company.
Buying on behalf of a company is fine: name the company at purchase and the licence covers one named user within it. For a team, write to us at hello@gridandglow.com and we will price a multi-seat licence rather than have you buy the same file repeatedly.
Changes You Make
Modify the file as the work requires. What you produce stays under this licence: editing does not create a new asset that escapes these limits, and a modified version may not be redistributed or sold as an asset in its own right.
Where a file carries embedded copyright or licence information, leave it in place.
Ownership
Grid&Glow LLC, or the original creator where a file came from a contributing author, keeps all copyright and intellectual property in it. This licence grants permission to use the file. It does not transfer ownership, and it does not give you rights in the file against anybody else.
You own the work you make. A finished design that incorporates one of our assets is yours, subject to the limits on this page.
Files Exported from GridPack Studio
Where your membership tier includes a commercial licence, files you export from GridPack Studio carry this licence, with the same 5,000-unit limit, from the moment of export.
The licence attaches at export and does not change afterwards. A later upgrade does not widen it, and cancelling your membership does not withdraw it: an export made under this licence stays under it, for the work it was made for. The full position is in the Terms and Conditions.
When You Outgrow This Licence
A run that goes past 5,000 does not void what you have already done. Buy the Extended Commercial Licence and continue: the two licences are cumulative in effect, and the earlier production stays covered.
Tell us before the press runs rather than after. An upgrade is a purchase; the same conversation after the fact is a claim.
If This Licence Is Breached
Where a file is used outside what this licence permits, the licence for that file ends and the use must stop. We may also require payment for the licence that would have covered the use, and recover costs where we have to pursue it.
In practice almost every case is a miscount or a source file that went to a client by habit. Write to us and it ends with an invoice, not a lawyer.
